Brendon Gill from Fonterra recently gave a talk at the branch entitled, “The evolution of methods of analysis for the determination of micronutrients in infant formula". This was a great opportunity to hear about Brendon’s work as an analytical chemist in the Nutritionals Lab at Waitoa and was well attended.

Congratulations to Megan Grainger who won the University of Waikato Early Career Research Excellence Award which was presented at a ceremony earlier in the year.

Professor Scott McIndoe from the University of Victoria, Canada, visited recently and gave a very interesting talk entitled, “MoleculAR CAKE” which discussed two new teaching tools that his lab has recently built: MoleculAR; a free augmented reality chemical education app to help students comprehend 3D chemical structures and Continuous Addition Kinetic Elucidation (CAKE), a technique to extract parameters such as reaction order in reactant and catalyst, the rate constant, and the amount of poison in a catalytic reaction from a single experiment.
