Suraj Patel is a PhD student at Massey University studying in the Rowlands group. His research focuses on synthesising multifunctional [2.2]paracyclophane catalysts and investigating their properties using various techniques. Suraj has an interest in organic chemistry and a growing passion for crystallography. Outside of his studies, Suraj can often be spotted at the pub or indulging in his hobbies of photography and working on scientific art projects.

Chemists have long known about the switching properties of azo compounds, but recently they have started to exploit the change in shape and properties to allow them to control material properties, catalytic activity and selectivity, biomedical applications, and others.
